PALAMIDA - Istria Peninsula

Palamida, she’s a relatively new addition to Istria’s wreck roster, settling onto the seabed back in 2011 after a collision. Don’t let her youth fool you; she’s already a prime example of how quickly the Mediterranean reclaims its own. We love a wreck that’s easy to navigate, and Palamida, sitting upright at 24 metres, fits the bill perfectly. Glide down the mooring line and you’ll find her intact, the fishing nets still draped around her like ghostly curtains, swaying gently with the surge. Penetration is possible for trained wreck divers, with the wheelhouse and engine room offering interesting swim-throughs, but even from the outside, there’s plenty to explore. Schools of small damselfish dart through the superstructure, and we’ve often spotted conger eels peeking from dark crevices. Our favourite part has to be the stern, where the propellor sits proudly, encrusted with sponges and anemones. Visibility here can vary, but on a good day, the light plays beautifully through the deck hatches, creating an eerie, atmospheric dive. She’s a cracker for photographers and anyone keen to see nature’s rapid reclamation of a modern wreck.
