Park Thalwil - Istria Peninsula

Scorpion Cave is one of our favourite little detours on Malta's south coast. It’s not about huge pelagics here, it’s about the atmosphere and the details. You'll duck under an overhang, then ascend gently into a surprisingly large air pocket. The real magic happens with your torch off, letting your eyes adjust to the soft glow filtering from the entrance. We've seen schools of juvenile bream darting in and out, and the walls are often covered in these intricate calcareous green algae, which just glow in your torch beam. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff – ornate wrasse are common, and we’ve even spotted hooded shrimp tucked into crevices if you look closely enough. The light play, especially on a sunny afternoon, is really what makes this cave special. It’s an easy dive, mostly shallow, so it’s perfect for a relaxed second dive or for divers who are just getting comfortable with overhead environments. We'd suggest aiming for mid-afternoon; the sun angle really brings out the colours inside.
