Riedsort - Istria Peninsula

Reef Patches, off Christmas Island, gives us exactly what we look for in an outer reef – an honest, flourishing expanse that doesn't feel like it's trying too hard. The coral cover here is impressive, particularly the chunky closed brain corals and the sprawling staghorn formations. We've spent dives just hovering, watching Desjardin’s Sailfin Tangs and Archer Butterflyfish weave through the branches. What really makes Reef Patches stand out for us is the sheer number of smaller, more intimate encounters. Keep an eye out for Crested Sabretooth Blennies poking their heads from crevices, and the surprisingly camouflaged Burrowing urchins. You’ll definitely spot Roundhead Parrotfish chomping away, leaving their tell-tale sand trails. We often see Gray Reef Sharks here, usually cruising the deeper edges of the reef. For photographers, the Pavona corals bathed in late morning light are a beautiful subject. Current isn't usually an issue, making it a relaxed dive for anyone comfortable with open water. If you’re into just observing a healthy, bustling reef without too much effort, this is our pick.
