Rossblatten - Istria Peninsula

Reef Patches is a site we keep coming back to on Kiritimati. It’s not about dramatic drop-offs or big pelagics, but rather an intense focus on the smaller stuff, the sort of dive where you spend 70 minutes barely moving. The coral structures here, while not towering, are intricate, full of overhangs and tiny crevices that demand a slow pace. We love settling in and just observing a patch of reef, watching Lamarck's Porcelain Crabs wave their feeding fans or a Coral Blenny peeking out. You’ll see schools of Twinstripe Fusiliers constantly shifting, drawing in Argus Groupers that glide through the current. Keep an eye out for the vibrant blue of the Blue-banded Pualu against the coral, or an Achilles Tang darting past. It's a fantastic spot for macro photographers or anyone who gets a kick out of truly seeing the reef’s busy, miniature world. We’d suggest going in the morning, the light filtering through the water really brings out the colours on the shallow patches.
