Sandy Beach - Istria Peninsula

L-Aħrax, out on the northern tip of Malta, is one of those sites we always try to hit when we're in the area. Forget the big, famous caverns for a moment – this is where you go for genuinely rich macro life and a slower, more deliberate dive. We usually start by dropping into the main cave, letting our eyes adjust to the dim light filtering through the entrance. It's not a huge system, but it's draped in scarlet coral and home to some seriously photogenic pink plate weeds. Our favourite part, though, is the wall outside the cave. That's where you'll find the real action. Keep an eye out for Mediterranean feather stars clinging to the rocks, their delicate arms waving in the subtle surge. We've often spotted wrinkled swimming crabs scuttling past and even an elusive seahorse or two tucked into the Posidonia meadows just off the main wall. Common cuttlefish are a frequent sight, sometimes even a dusky grouper peering out from a rocky crevice. It’s a shallower dive, rarely pushing past 15 metres, which means plenty of bottom time to really explore. We’d suggest going early in the morning to avoid any boat traffic, especially in summer. It’s perfect for divers who appreciate the smaller wonders and aren't just chasing big pelagics.
