Seegarten - Istria Peninsula

Reef Patch is one of those sites we always circle back to on Christmas Island. It’s not about dramatic drop-offs or cavern systems, it’s purely about the sheer density of reef fish. You can hover over a patch of hard coral, watch the sunlight shimmer, and just count species. We’ve logged Yellowmargin triggerfish eyeing us from their territory, schools of Blunt-head Parrotfish grazing with a rhythmic crunch you can almost hear, and every kind of butterflyfish imaginable - Line, Archer, you name it. Our favourite thing to do here is find a comfortable spot and just let the reef life unfold around us. Look closely for Lamarck's Porcelain Crabs waving their feeding fans from anemones. The currents are usually mild, making it a relaxed dive that suits photographers or anyone who just wants to soak it all in. We’d suggest going in the late morning, the light really brings out the colours of the corals and the fish scales. It’s an easy, rewarding dive.
