Tauchplatz Sipplingen - Istria Peninsula

Tomatikolop Reef, off New Britain, is one of those sites we always circle back to. What really grabs us here isn't the dramatic drop-offs or big pelagics – though Shortfin mako do cruise through – it's the sheer density of the smaller stuff. We love settling in on a coral bommie, watching the currents bring in schools of Short Mackerel, their scales flashing silver. The coral itself is surprisingly robust; brain corals and staghorn formations create a maze of nooks. We’ve found Carnelian Cowries here, tucked away in crevices, and spent ages just observing the subtle movements of Black-lined Blennies popping from their holes. Keep an eye out for the nautilus; they’re shy, but we’ve seen them drifting lazily in the deeper sections. If you can time it right, a morning dive, just after dawn, often means less current and better visibility before the afternoon breeze picks up. This spot is perfect for photographers, or anyone who enjoys slow, deliberate dives, finding beauty in the minute details rather than grand sweeping vistas.
