Varese - Istria Peninsula

The Varese wreck off Istria is one of those dives that feels like stepping back in time. We love exploring the bow section, especially in the late morning when the sun’s at a good angle and rays pierce through the schools of small fish hanging around the forward deck. It’s a good 40 metres down, so this is definitely for experienced divers comfortable with deeper profiles. The Varese was a torpedo boat sunk during World War II, and it lies remarkably intact, sitting upright on the seabed. We’ve always found it impressive how much of the structure remains; you can fin along the deck, peer into hatches, and imagine the history that unfolded here. Groupers the size of small dogs often lurk in the shadowed holds, and the metal superstructure is draped in jewel anemones and sponges, creating this incredible patchwork of colour. Our favourite part is the stern where the anti-aircraft gun is still visible, encrusted with sea stars. Visibility can be excellent here, often pushing 25 metres, but always check local conditions; strong currents can sometimes sweep through, making for a challenging dive. If you're into history and deep wrecks, Varese is a must.
