VIRIBUS UNITIS - Istria Peninsula

The Viribus Unitis is a different kind of wreck dive, a genuine piece of history right here in Istria. We're not talking deep exploration here, it's just 5 metres down, but that's its charm. This is the remains of a massive Austro-Hungarian battleship, sabotaged by Italian frogmen on the very last day of World War I. You can almost feel the weight of that history when you’re floating above it. Because it's so shallow, light penetrates right through, illuminating the scattered pieces of this once-mighty vessel. What's left isn't a towering hull, but a debris field of twisted metal plates, pipes, and some seriously chunky armour plating, all spread across the seabed. It’s like a metal graveyard, slowly being reclaimed. We love seeing the way the Mediterranean has moved in; little schools of damselfish flit between the rusted sections, and we've spotted scorpionfish tucked into crevices. This site is perfect for photographers who want to play with light and shadow on historical artefacts, and for anyone who appreciates a wreck with a truly dramatic story behind it, without needing to go deep to find it.
