Wreck Romagna - Istria Peninsula

The Romagna wreck off the Istria coast is one of our favourites, a proper deep dive that feels like a journey back in time. She was a cargo ship, torpedoed in 1944, and now she sits upright at 36 metres, remarkably intact despite her age. We love dropping down onto her deck, where the ghost of her past still feels palpable, especially when the visibility is good and you can make out her full silhouette. Inside, you can fin through the engine room and cargo holds, but do it carefully; this is a true penetration dive and needs proper training. Sunlight filters down through the superstructure, illuminating schools of small fish that dart between the metal beams. We've seen conger eels poking their heads out of crevices in the hull, and often a big scorpionfish will be camouflaged perfectly on the deck plating. The sheer scale of the Romagna at this depth, combined with that sense of history, is what truly sets her apart. It’s definitely one for the experienced wreck diver looking for a substantial, moody exploration rather than a quick coral fix.
