WZT;Luftverbund - Istria Peninsula

The Unknown 1788 isn’t one of Scapa Flow’s celebrated German giants, but that’s precisely why we love it. Tucked away, often overlooked, this isn’t a quick dive for ticking off another hull. We’re talking about an older, wooden wreck, likely a schooner or similar, and it’s a dive that rewards slow exploration and a keen eye. Dropping down, the structure itself is more scattered than intact, broken by years of currents, but you can still make out the ribs and timbers, often draped in long strands of oarweed that sway with the gentle surge. It feels ancient, a true archaeological site, and we’ve spent many dives just tracing the lines of the hull, imagining the history here. Conger eels are often lurking in the deeper, darker sections, and the entire wreck is carpeted in a thick, shaggy growth of iridescent sea mats and various seaweeds – the greens and reds of Irish moss and carragheen are particularly vibrant against the dull wood. Visibility here can vary, but on a good day, with a bit of sunlight filtering through, it’s a beautifully atmospheric dive, offering a quiet contrast to the imposing steel of the battleships.
