Zollerbucht - Istria Peninsula

St. Elmo's Left Reef, for us, is one of those easy, satisfying dives you could do every day. The entry from the shore is straightforward, which we always appreciate. Once you're in, you just follow the gentle slope of the reef, which is really more of a rocky wall draped in green and brown algae, but don't let that put you off. It’s the small stuff here that keeps us coming back. We love spotting common octopus tucked into crevices, their eyes watching you with unnerving intelligence. Look for painted combers hovering over the rocks, and those damsel fish are everywhere, darting amongst the sparse corals. It’s also one of our favourite spots to find seahorses, though you’ll need a keen eye and a patient fin. We’ve had our best luck finding them clinging to Mediterranean tapeweed. Visibility here can vary, but generally, it’s a calm site. It’s perfect for a relaxed afternoon dive, or for honing those macro photography skills without the stress of currents or deep profiles. Just keep an eye out for boat traffic if you surface away from the entry point.
