HMS CRICKET (PROBABLY) - Larnaca

Alright, let’s talk about the HMS Cricket (Probably). We say 'probably' because while the story is compelling – a WWI gunboat turned WWII minesweeper, damaged by a mine and then supposedly scuttled here – confirming the exact vessel is still a bit of an ongoing dive-club debate. But honestly, who cares when you’re finning over such a cracking wreck? Lying at a comfortable 20 metres, this is our favourite kind of historical dive. The wreck itself is substantial, over 70 metres long, and you can really get a sense of its original bulk as you glide along the main deck. The hull structure is still largely intact, allowing for some straightforward swim-throughs – keep an eye out for the resident groupers that often lurk in the darker sections. We love the way the light filters through the remaining deck plates, illuminating schools of chromis that seem to shimmer against the rusted metal. It’s a photographer’s dream down here, especially on a sunny afternoon when the visibility stretches to 20 metres or more. We'd suggest going early to have it mostly to yourself. The Cricket makes for a fantastic second dive or a relaxed first dive if you’re looking to soak in some history without battling strong currents.
