GYPTIS - Paphos & Coral Bay

GYPTIS is a proper curiosity, a 1976 wreck that isn’t deep, just 6 metres, but it’s packed with character. This is one of five barges sunk in a gale off Latchi, and frankly, we think it’s our favourite of the lot. You get the distinct feeling of history here, a working vessel suddenly caught out by the weather. We love poking around the steel ribs, imagining the gale that put it here. Schools of juvenile damselfish flit in and out of the rusted metalwork, and you’ll often spot an octopus tucked into a crevice, watching you with a single, intelligent eye. It’s a pretty easy dive, perfect for extending a bottom time, or for photographers who want to spend ages framing shots without worrying about depth. The light penetration is fantastic, really making the colours pop, even the subtle hues of the sponges and algae that have started to colonise the wreck. Look closely for nudibranchs, too. They’re usually camouflaged but they are there.
