GRETHE - Bornholm

The Grethe is one of our favourite wreck dives on Bornholm, primarily because it's so accessible and still has that tangible sense of history. She’s a steamship, sunk in 1940, and sits upright in a shallow 10 metres of water. We love a wreck where you can really get a feel for the ship, and the Grethe delivers. You’ll see her bow first, often with a lazy cod or two peeking out from the darker recesses. The stern is largely intact, and you can swim through the holds – an easy penetration for even less experienced wreck divers. Sunlight filters through the top, illuminating the dense growth of green and brown algae that coats almost every surface. Flatfish often hug the sand around the wreck’s perimeter, almost perfectly camouflaged. We always find ourselves drawn to the intact mast, still standing proud, now a habitat for small crabs and anemones. It’s a dive that tells a story, and you can practically feel the Baltic’s cold embrace from decades past. It’s a great pick for newer wreck divers or those just looking for a relaxed exploration.
