    Bornholm, out in the Baltic, is a bit of a curveball when people think of Danish diving. Forget the North Sea’s gloom; here, the visibility genuinely surprises, often hitting 20 metres on a good day, which for this part of the world, feels like a miracle. We love Bornholm for its wreck graveyard - over 390 sites recorded and many still waiting to be truly explored. Diving Bornholm means picking your wreck and spending time with it. There’s no rush. You’ll find everything from old fishing vessels to naval casualties, often surprisingly intact thanks to the cold water. We’ve spent hours poking around the *Bolette*, a cargo ship that went down in the 1940s, and it’s always a good dive. The marine life isn't tropical, obviously, but it’s still interesting. Look for the common gobies darting between the metal, and we’ve spotted red-throated divers overhead on ascents. In spring, the chance of seeing salmon or sea trout is higher, particularly near the rocky reefs, making for a different kind of encounter. Strong currents can pick up around the northern tip, so always check local conditions before heading out to those deeper wrecks. It’s proper Baltic diving, honest and rewarding if you know what to expect.

    Down off Bornholm, the 422 wreck offers a solid dive for anyone interested in a bit of maritime history. This coaster went down after a collision back in '62, splitting in two during the incident. You'll find it settled at about 20 metres, the stern section being the more intact of the two pieces. The bow is pretty broken up, but the stern still has some structure to explore, with plenty of entry points for light penetration. Over the years, the metal has become home to a good variety of local fish and crabs, making it a decent spot for a calm exploration dive when the conditions are right.

    The AAR wreck lies at a shallow 11 meters off Bornholm, making it accessible for newer divers interested in history. This dangerous wreck, as classified by local authorities, is surprisingly intact in parts, with opportunities to explore its structure. We often find local cod and blennies sheltering within the metalwork. It’s a good choice for divers looking for an easy wreck dive with a bit of a story.

    ACAPULCO 5

    Acapulco 5 isn't about depth or pristine reefs; it's a slice of maritime history, easy to reach and full of character. We love this site for its accessibility and the way it tells a story right there in the shallows. The yacht, sunk back in '71 after dragging anchor, lies just 3 metres down, perfect for a long, relaxed snorkel or a super chill dive. You’ll find its remains scattered across a rocky bottom. The hull has broken up quite a bit, but there’s still plenty to poke around in – ribs, planks, and even some of the engine components are visible. Schools of juvenile pollack often flicker through the gaps, and we’ve seen some decent-sized crabs scuttling amongst the wreckage. It’s a great spot for photographers keen on capturing the interplay of light and shadow on the decaying wood. Honestly, we’d suggest timing your visit for a calm, sunny day; the visibility really pops, making the details of the wreck clearer and the colours more vibrant. This is our pick for a leisurely afternoon, a gentle introduction to wreck diving, or just a chance to explore a small piece of Bornholm's past.

    ADA

    The ADA, a schooner resting at 42 metres off Bornholm, offers a classic wreck dive for those comfortable with deeper profiles. She’s largely intact, giving you a real sense of her original shape as you descend. Expect to find her superstructure draped in an interesting mix of northern sea life-anemones cling to the decking, and we’ve spotted cod and blennies poking around the hull. It’s a good one for photographers looking for that distinct northern wreck aesthetic, moody and atmospheric. Visibility can vary, so we suggest checking local conditions before you head out.

    Adlergrund

    Adlergrund, off Bornholm, is a good pick if you’re diving the Baltic. It’s a submerged bank, really, a healthy patch of coral reef in these cooler waters. We’ve seen lumpsuckers tucked into crevices, flat periwinkles clinging to the rock, and some impressive schools of whiting. If you’re lucky, you might spot a dab or a fluke nestled on the sandy patches. It’s a decent drift dive when the current picks up, and it suits divers looking for something a bit different than your typical tropical reef.

    AEGEUS

    The *Aegeus* is one of those wrecks that just grabs you. Lying at 55m, she’s a deep dive, no question, but for those with the training, it’s a proper exploration. We love the sheer scale of her; 106 metres long, sitting upright on the seabed. Dropping down, you can feel the current pick up sometimes, but once you’re on the deck, the ship just absorbs you. Our favourite part has to be the bow, still impressively intact, with the anchor chains draped like giant necklaces. We’ve seen some decent cod patrolling the holds, and the bridge area is often swarming with schools of small fish. The visibility here can be superb on a good day, giving you that incredible sense of the wreck stretching out into the gloom. It’s a dive for technical divers, obviously, but if you’re comfortable at depth and love the history a wreck like this holds, the *Aegeus* is a standout. Just be mindful of decompression, and make sure your gas planning is solid. This isn't a quick dip.

    AINAN

    The AINAN, a schooner that ran aground in 1946, sits in just 7 metres of water off Bornholm. It’s a shallow dive, easy enough for newer divers to enjoy a proper wreck experience without deep specialities. You’ll find the hull largely intact, settled on its side, creating plenty of nooks and crannies for curious divers to poke around. We’ve spotted cod lurking in the shadows and small crabs scuttling across the timbers. Visibility can vary, but on a good day, the light plays beautifully through the wreck, highlighting the aged wood and the life taking hold. It’s a solid wreck dive for a relaxed afternoon.

    ALBERT

    The Bornholm coast is full of surprises, and ALBERT is one of our favourites. This isn't a deep dive by any stretch, a mere four metres, which makes it perfect for a long, relaxed exploration. What we love about ALBERT is the way the wreck itself, a classified dangerous wreck, has become a home. You’ll weave around twisted metal plates, follow the faint outlines of where the hull once was, and push past kelp fronds that sway with the gentle surge. It’s an almost archaeological experience, piecing together the ghost of a ship from the scattered remains. We’ve spent hours here, tracing the ribs of the ship, watching blennies dart into crevices and small crabs scuttling over corroded steel. The shallow depth means you get fantastic natural light penetration, painting the wreck in shifting greens and blues, making it feel alive in a way deeper wrecks sometimes don't. Our top tip? Go on a calm day; the visibility improves dramatically, and you can really take your time examining the smaller details. This site is ideal for photographers looking for interesting textures and light, or newer divers wanting a glimpse into Bornholm's maritime history without the pressure of depth.

    ALIDA (OR ELIDA)

    The ALIDA, or ELIDA as some charts have it, is a Bornholm wreck we’ve spent more than a few hours on. She’s a dangerous wreck, for sure, sitting at a shallow 18m, but that just means you need to dive it smart, not avoid it. What we love about the ALIDA is how intact she is for a wreck of her age and depth. You can still make out the bow, the stern, and parts of the superstructure, giving it a real sense of its past. This isn’t a colourful reef dive, obviously, but the grey scale of the Baltic Sea suits her. Look closely and you’ll find plenty of life: blennies peeking from crevices, small crabs scuttling across the deck plates, and shoals of juvenile cod darting through the skeleton of the hold. Our favourite is exploring the internal spaces, but only if you’re properly trained and equipped for overhead environments. Otherwise, circling the outside, appreciating the lines of the ship and the way the light filters down through the Baltic green, is a fantastic dive. It’s definitely one for wreck enthusiasts who appreciate history and a good story over coral gardens.
