Why dive here
With 66+ marine species recorded in the area - including jellyfish lake - HERSING offers some of Bornholm's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 3-18°C, warmest July, August, September.
Hersing isn't a dive you do for big pelagics or technicolor reefs. You come here for history, for the quiet chill of the Baltic, and for a wreck that tells a story. We love the way the light filters through the green water, illuminating the dark, angular shapes of the old cargo ship. It’s an 11-meter maximum depth, making it pretty accessible, but don't mistake that for easy. This is a dangerous wreck, classification, meaning you treat it with respect. The Hersing herself is a beauty, slowly being reclaimed. You’ll find schools of cod sheltering in the holds, sometimes a solitary flatfish half-buried in the sand nearby. Our favorite detail is the way the metal has corroded, creating these fantastic textures for blennies and small crabs to hide in. Entry can be a bit tricky depending on the weather, so we always check the forecast for a calm day. It’s a dive for those who appreciate maritime history and the subtle beauty of temperate waters, for divers who like to take their time and really soak in the atmosphere of a sunken vessel.
