Why dive here
With 66+ marine species recorded in the area - including jellyfish lake - HERTHA offers some of Bornholm's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 3-18°C, warmest July, August, September.
Hertha is one of those wrecks that really grabs you, even at just 12 metres. This old German steamer, sunk in 1917, lies broken but still very much a ship, not just a pile of rubble. We love how the stern section is particularly intact; you can still make out the prop shaft and the steering gear, giving you a real sense of its past. Cruising over the deck, we often see large cod lurking in the shadows, and schools of pollock weave through the twisted metal. It’s a fantastic site for photographers, especially with the decent visibility Bornholm often offers in summer. The wreck is starting to soften with growth, anemones and hydroids coating the steel, adding a splash of colour. Our top tip: dive this one mid-morning on a calm day for the best light penetration into the deeper sections of the wreck. It's a proper adventure for divers who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a current sometimes.
