MARGARETA - Bornholm

Margareta isn’t just some metal hulk on the seabed, it’s a portal back to a specific moment in history. We find it genuinely eerie, dropping onto the deck of this steamship, knowing it was bombed during WWII and sank quickly, taking 15 lives with it. At 20 meters, it's deep enough to feel like a proper wreck dive, but shallow enough that you get good bottom time. The stern is our favourite part, with the propeller still intact and an almost ghostly feeling around the gunwale. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, as it often is in the Baltic. We've had days where it’s 15 meters and you can pick out the mast structure from a distance, and others where it's more like five meters, making the wreck appear out of the gloom with a real sense of drama. It’s a completely different experience each time. Look closely for the life that’s made a home of the wreck: we’ve seen some decent cod patrolling the holds and plenty of crabs scuttling over the plating. This site suits divers who appreciate a wreck with a story, who don’t mind a bit of a chill, and who find beauty in the slow reclamation of man-made objects by the sea.
