MATHILDE - Bornholm

Mathilde isn’t about depth, it’s about accessible history, practically begging you to explore. At just two metres, this is less a dive and more a snorkel, but don't let the shallowness fool you. We love this site for its unique character. It's an old wooden fishing trawler, sunk in 1963, and the timber frame is still remarkably intact. You can fin right over the deck, poke your head into what was once the wheelhouse, and imagine the crew working these very waters decades ago. The wreck is now home to a surprising amount of life. Crabs scuttle through the skeletal ribs, and sometimes we see flounders camouflaged against the sandy bottom nearby. The light filtering through the surface ripples dances beautifully on the weathered wood, giving the whole scene a really serene, almost melancholic feel. Our favourite time to visit is on a calm, sunny morning; the visibility is usually best then. It’s perfect for families, new divers gaining confidence, or anyone who appreciates a piece of local history you can literally touch.
