Patricia - Bornholm

The Patricia, off Bornholm, isn’t about huge pelagics or technicolor reefs. It’s about the wreck itself, a fishing vessel that went down in 1946, now resting upright at 34 metres. Descending, the hull emerges from the green Baltic gloom, surprisingly intact, especially the stern where the propeller and rudder are still in place. We love nosing around the wheelhouse, imagining the chaos as she went down. It’s a proper penetration dive for those with the right training, but even staying outside, you can explore the holds, which are now home to substantial cod and schools of pollack. Look closely at the deck fittings; the cold water preserves them beautifully. This is our pick for divers who appreciate history and the quiet solitude of a well-preserved wreck rather than a busy coral reef. Visibility can vary, but on a good day, the details are striking, making the effort of a drysuit worthwhile. Best to go on a calm day, as the boat ride out can be a little bouncy.
