ULRICH FINSTERWALDE - Bornholm

Ulrich Finsterwalde isn't about deep dives or big pelagics, it’s about history you can touch, and frankly, a bit of an engineering marvel. We love how accessible this site is, literally just a couple of metres down. You're swimming over the remains of a massive concrete cargo ship, scuttled after WWII. Imagine a vessel built out of glorified paving slabs. The concrete hull is still largely intact, a strange, brutalist skeleton on the seafloor. Exploring it feels like wandering through a sunken industrial ruin. You can trace the deck lines, peer into what were once cargo holds, now colonised by thick swathes of green and brown algae, waving gently with the surge. Crab scuttle over the rough surfaces and blennies peek from crevices. Visibility here can vary, but on a good day, with sunlight filtering through, the grey concrete takes on a ghostly glow. It’s perfect for divers who appreciate a wreck with a story, especially those who prefer long, shallow bottom times to explore every detail. Get in early before any boat traffic kicks up the sediment.
