COFFERO - North Sea Coast

The North Sea isn't always about big pelagics and dramatic walls. Sometimes, it’s about history and the quiet beauty of a wreck reclaiming the seabed. The COFFERO, a German U-boat from WWI, sits upright at 24 metres, remarkably intact. This isn’t a rummage-through-the-bowls kind of wreck; penetration is out, the structure is listed as dangerous and we respect that, but the exterior offers plenty to explore. We love finning along her conning tower, imagining the history, before dropping down to the deck. Shoals of cod and pollock often hover above the hull, using the wreck for shelter, and we've spotted the occasional inquisitive seal darting past. The visibility can be a bit hit-or-miss – it’s the North Sea, after all – but on a good day, when the light penetrates, the U-boat’s silhouette is quite stark against the sandy bottom. This site is definitely one for wreck enthusiasts who appreciate the atmospheric dive over coral gardens. Head out on a calm day for the best chance at decent visibility.
