EMILIE - North Sea Coast

Emilie isn’t your typical North Sea wreck. For starters, she’s a schooner, which already gives her a more elegant silhouette than the usual steel hulks we find. Sunk in 1942, Emilie sits upright in about 20 meters, and we love how intact she remains. You can still see the mast reaching upwards, and if you’re careful, poke your head into the hold where we’ve often seen big conger eels lurking. The wood of her hull is wonderfully colonised by plumose anemones, creating these soft, feathery white blankets that shimmer in your torch beam. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, as it often is along this coast. We’d suggest aiming for a calm day after a few days of settled weather; that’s when you get the best chance of decent light penetration. Even with average visibility, the wreck’s character still shines through. It’s a site for divers who appreciate history and the quiet beauty of a wooden ship reclaimed by the sea. Expect to find schools of cod darting between the timbers and crabs scuttling over the decking. It’s a peaceful, contemplative dive.
