ERNA GAULBE - North Sea Coast

The ERNA GAULBE is pure history, practically on the beach. It’s a shallow wreck, just five meters down, which means long bottom times and plenty of light even on an overcast day. We love that it’s so accessible, making it a perfect spot for newer wreck divers or anyone looking for a relaxed exploration. The ERNA GAULBE was a fishing trawler, torpedoed in 1918, and what remains is remarkably intact considering its age and location. You’ll find the bow section and boiler mostly, with ribs reaching up like skeletal fingers into the water column. The wreck is now home to a surprising amount of life. Crabs scuttle through the remaining structure, and schools of small fish weave in and out of the rusted metal. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a curious seal poking its head around the wreckage. Our favourite tip for this site: go at high tide. The visibility tends to be better, and the current, while never fierce, is at its most forgiving. It’s a great site for photographers, too, with the sunlight playing off the wreck's contours and the occasional passing fish.
