FINGAL I - North Sea Coast

Fingal I is one of our favourite North Sea wrecks, a cargo steamship sitting at a very accessible 14 metres. She went down in 1940 after a cargo explosion, and you can still feel that history as you descend. The wreck itself is reasonably intact for its age, stretched out on the seabed, measuring almost 45 metres long. We love nosing around the bow section, where the anchor chain still drapes over the deck, and the stern, where the propeller is often visible, encrusted with anemones. Visibility here can be a bit of a North Sea lottery, but on a good day, it’s a genuinely atmospheric dive. When the light filters down, the shadowy interior of the holds becomes visible, though we wouldn't recommend penetration due to its "dangerous wreck" classification. Instead, we stick to the outside, where the hull is draped in dead man’s fingers and often hosts inquisitive cod and schools of pollack. It’s a dive for those who appreciate maritime history and the slow reclamation of steel by the sea.
