George H. Hastie
Why dive here
With 95+ marine species recorded in the area - including seals & sea lions, sea turtles and jellyfish lake - George H. Hastie offers some of North Sea Coast's richest reef diving. Water ranges 3-19°C, warmest July, August, September.
The *George H. Hastie* isn't your typical deep North Sea wreck dive. At a mere three metres, this trawler, sunk in 1958, sits shallow enough that it’s less a dive and more a snorkel with a tank. We love it for that accessibility, especially on a sunny day when the light penetrates right to the seabed. You’ll find the *Hastie* quite broken up, but its skeleton is still very much there, the bow and stern sections offering the most to poke around. The twisted metal beams and plates are encrusted with anemones, their tentacles swaying gently in the slight surge. Crab species are everywhere, scuttling into crevices, and we’ve often spotted flatfish camouflaged against the sand right next to the hull. The main draw here is the sheer amount of light play through the wreck, casting shifting shadows that make even the smallest goby feel like a dramatic discovery. It’s an ideal spot for new divers to get a feel for wreck penetration (albeit very shallow) or for photographers wanting to experiment with ambient light on a historical structure. Go at high tide for the best visibility; it just adds that little bit more water column to truly immerse yourself.
Safety Notes
