GOTTFRIED BUCKREN - North Sea Coast

Gottfried Buckren is a proper dive, a deep plunge into North Sea history. We love it because it’s not just a wreck, it’s a story, lying upright and mostly intact at 28 metres. Dropping down, you start to make out the shape of the steamship, the ghostly outline emerging from the gloom, often with a slight chill in the water that reminds you exactly where you are. The visibility here can swing, but when it’s good, you can spend a solid chunk of bottom time exploring the deck and superstructure. Our favourite part has to be the stern, where the prop is still visible, encrusted with anemones and the occasional squat lobster peeking out from the growth. Schools of saithe often hang off the main mast, swirling in the current, and cod are usually lurking in the shadows of the holds. It’s a site for experienced cold-water divers, no doubt. The conditions demand respect, but the reward is a tangible connection to maritime history, a dive that leaves you feeling like you’ve genuinely discovered something.
