GRETHE A 623 - North Sea Coast

The Grethe A 623 is a cracking North Sea wreck, especially if you appreciate a bit of history with your dive. She went down in 1944, a fishing vessel caught in the throes of wartime, and she sits upright and largely intact at 22 metres. We love how her wooden structure has softened with time, parts collapsing in on themselves, yet the overall shape is still very much that of a boat. Diving her, you get this incredible sense of a moment frozen in time. The bow is particularly photogenic, often draped in fishing nets, home to schools of cod and pollock. Look closely and you'll spot crabs scuttling over the decking and anemones clinging to the metalwork. Our favourite time to dive her is on an incoming tide when the visibility often pushes past 10 metres, allowing you to really soak in the atmosphere. It’s a dive for those who enjoy exploration, with plenty of nooks and crannies to peer into, though penetration is definitely not advised given her age and the nature of the collapse. We'd suggest this one for advanced divers, purely due to the North Sea conditions and the potential for currents.
