HEDWIGSHUTTE - North Sea Coast

The Hedwigshutte is a wreck dive that really delivers a sense of history. She was a German steamship, mined and sunk in 1945, and now she sits upright at a very manageable 20 metres. We love that the main deck is mostly intact, making for some fascinating swim-throughs if you're comfortable with penetration. You’ll weave through the old cargo holds, where light filters in from above, and imagine the ship in her final moments. Our favourite part is the stern section; the propeller is still there, massive and covered in anemones, and the rudder lies flat on the seabed. There aren't many huge pelagics here, but the wreck itself is home to fat cod lurking in the shadows and countless small crabs scuttling over the steel plates. We’ve even spotted a conger eel or two poking out from gaps in the hull. Visibility can be a bit variable, so pick a calm day if you can, but even with 10-15 metres, the sheer scale of the Hedwigshutte is impressive. This site is a great pick for divers with some wreck experience looking for a proper, explorable piece of wartime history.
