HEINZ BERND - North Sea Coast

The *Heinz Bernd* is one of those wrecks that just gets under your skin. We love it because it’s not just a pile of metal, but a true snapshot of its final moments. Sunk in 1966, this merchant vessel lies upright at 21m, mostly intact. You can swim through the holds, imagining the cargo shifting as she went down. Light filters in from above, creating an eerie, almost cathedral-like feel inside the bigger compartments, where thick layers of silt dust the decks. Visibility here can be a bit of a gamble – it’s the North Sea, after all – but when it’s good, the sheer scale of the wreck is impressive. The superstructure is particularly fun to explore, now thoroughly encrusted with anemones and hydroids. Cod often drift lazily in the holds, and we’ve seen some surprisingly large lobsters tucked into crevices. This isn’t a colourful tropical reef, but the *Heinz Bernd* offers a deep, tangible connection to history and a real sense of discovery for divers who appreciate a good story and don't mind a bit of a current now and then.
