HERBART - North Sea Coast

The Herbart is an old dredge, sunk in a storm back in 1911. We love it for its sheer accessibility, sitting shallow at just six meters. You don't need to be a tech diver to poke around this piece of history, which makes it a standout in a region known for its deep, challenging wrecks. The dredge itself is surprisingly intact, considering its age and the North Sea's temperament. We've spent many a dive exploring its various compartments. You can still make out the large buckets used for dredging, now encrusted with mussels and anemones, creating a rough, uneven texture that contrasts with the smooth, rusted metal. Look closely and you'll spot crabs scuttling into cracks and small gobies darting between the rebar. The visibility here can be a bit of a gamble, often around 5-10 meters, but on a good day, with sunlight filtering through, the wreck feels particularly atmospheric. It’s perfect for divers who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a treasure hunt for marine life in dimmer conditions. Our tip: go at slack tide to avoid fighting any surge.
