HMS Defence - North Sea Coast

We love Centre Reef for its sheer, understated drama. Dropping down, you're immediately struck by the sheer wall, a tapestry of colour that feels distinctly Pacific Northwest. Forget tropical corals; here, it’s all about the soft pinks of the Scarlet Sea Anemone, the vivid orange of the Red Sea Urchins clinging to the rock face, and patches of bright green sea lettuce swaying in the gentle surge. Our favourite spot is around 15 metres, where the light filtering down truly illuminates the smaller crevices. This is where you'll often spot the Four-Spined Squat Lobsters, tiny and surprisingly vibrant, tucked into cracks alongside fragile tube worms. We'd suggest going on an incoming tide; the visibility tends to be at its best, and you might even catch a glimpse of a Big Skate gliding along the bottom. Keep an eye out for the elusive thorny worm, a truly oddball find. It’s a site that rewards slow, deliberate diving, perfect for macro enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates the unique, rugged beauty of cold-water diving.
