HOFFUNG - North Sea Coast

Hoffung is one of those North Sea wrecks that we just adore for its sheer accessibility and the way it’s become an artificial reef. Lying at a comfortable 8 meters, it’s a brilliant introduction to wreck diving, especially for those who want to get a feel for a ship without deep-water pressures. You’ll find the Hoffung, a former freighter, broken into a few substantial pieces, scattered across the sandy bottom. Our favourite part? The stern section, often draped in kelp, acts like a magnet for local fish – you’ll usually spot cod, wrasse, and sometimes even a flatfish camouflaged on the sand nearby. What you experience here is the quiet solemnity of a vessel slowly returning to the sea, now buzzing with new life. We’d suggest a dive here on a calm day, ideally after a period of settled weather, when the visibility often pushes past 5 meters. You can spend a good chunk of bottom time exploring the holds, seeing how the metal has buckled and twisted, and watching crabs scuttle among the crevices. It’s a tranquil, reflective dive that really highlights how quickly marine life reclaims man-made structures. Hoffung suits anyone looking for a relaxed wreck dive with a decent chance of seeing some cool North Sea residents.
