KAREN RONN - North Sea Coast

The Karen Ronn, a cutter lost to a mine in 1944, offers a different kind of North Sea dive. We’ve visited a few times, always finding something new. She sits upright at 15 metres, surprisingly intact for her age and demise. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, typical of the North Sea, but when it’s good, you can make out the lines of her deck and superstructure. It’s a proper historical dive, not a coral reef, so temper your expectations for flash colours. What we really love about the Karen Ronn is how life has taken hold. Deadman’s fingers sprout from every available surface, waving gently in the surge. You’ll spot crabs scuttling in the crevices, and sometimes, if you’re lucky, a curious cod will eye you from the hold. Penetration is possible for trained wreck divers, but we’d suggest a thorough external exploration first, especially around the stern, where the prop is still visible. It’s a moody, atmospheric dive, best for those who appreciate history and the quiet resilience of marine life adapting to a man-made structure. A strong torch is essential to bring out the details.
