MARGARETHA - North Sea Coast

The Margaretha. Now here’s a wreck that really gets under your skin, particularly if you’re into the history as much as the diving. We love the eerie calm that settles over the North Sea once you’re down, the silence only broken by your own breathing. She sits upright at 15 metres, a fishing trawler sunk by a mine in 1944. It’s a shallow dive, so you get decent bottom time to really nose around. You’ll find her mostly intact, her wheelhouse still offers good swim-throughs, and the stern section is particularly interesting. Our favourite part has to be the way the marine life has completely taken over. Big cod often lurk in the shadows, and we’ve seen schools of saithe swirling around the mast on many occasions, their scales catching the diffused light. Sometimes, if you’re lucky and the vis is good, you’ll even spot a couple of resident conger eels peeking from the darker corners of the engine room. This isn't a brightly coloured coral reef, it’s a sombre, historic site, but full of character and surprisingly abundant life. It suits divers who appreciate a good story with their dive, and aren’t afraid of a bit of green water.
