NINA NITU - North Sea Coast

The Nina Nitu isn’t your typical big, broken-up trawler. This wooden fishing vessel, only 13.9 metres long, sits upright on the seabed at 23 metres, having sunk in 2010 after a collision. We love its compact size; it’s a proper little time capsule, largely intact. You can swim around the entire structure easily, peeking into what would have been the wheelhouse and imagining the last moments. What really makes the Nina Nitu special is the way the North Sea has claimed it. Despite its relatively recent sinking, the wood is already softened and cloaked in sea anemones, giving it this almost fuzzy, organic feel. Large crabs often scuttle in and out of the nooks, and we’ve seen some decent-sized cod hanging around the bow. The visibility can be a bit challenging, typical for the North Sea, but when it clears, the light filtering down onto that small, upright wreck is quite atmospheric. We’d suggest diving this one on a slack tide; the currents here can pick up, making it a bit less enjoyable to truly explore the finer details of the deck. It’s a rewarding dive for those who appreciate the quiet history of a smaller wreck.
