PADILLA - North Sea Coast

Padilla, a lighter vessel sunk during World War I, sits broken in the shallows of the North Sea. We’re talking 10 metres, tops, so it’s a great option when you don’t want to go deep. What’s left of the wreck is scattered, creating a fascinating debris field rather than a single intact structure. You’ll find ribs of steel emerging from the sand, twisted plates, and machinery parts-each piece telling a bit of its story. It’s less about penetration here and more about a leisurely exploration of the scattered remains. Visibility can be a bit variable, typical for the North Sea, but when it’s good, the light plays wonderfully through the broken sections. We've seen some surprisingly colourful nudibranchs clinging to the metal, and there’s usually a decent population of crabs scuttling amongst the bits of hull. Our favourite is spotting the flatfish, often camouflaged so perfectly against the sand near the wreckage. It’s not a drift dive, just a gentle potter about, making it perfect for divers who enjoy historical context and the thrill of discovery without strong currents.
