PETER MARIA - North Sea Coast

The Peter Maria, sunk in 1928, sits upright at 28 meters, a haunting silhouette on the North Sea floor. This isn't a site for drift-diving past pretty corals. Instead, we love it for its raw, historical feel, a proper wreck dive where you can almost taste the past. We found the schooner surprisingly intact, the bow rising proudly from the sand, giving you a real sense of its former grandeur. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, as is typical for the North Sea, but we've had some cracking days where the light filters down, illuminating the deck and creating dramatic shadows. Look closely, and you'll spot plenty of life that's made this wreck home – plump cod lurking in the holds, conger eels peeking from beneath twisted metal, and clouds of small fish darting through the superstructure. Our favorite part is exploring the stern, where the rudder and propeller are still visible. It’s a site best suited for experienced cold-water wreck divers who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a challenge. Come prepared for chilly water and potentially strong currents, but the rewards are definitely worth it.
