UPMEIER - North Sea Coast

The Upmeier wreck is a fantastic dive, a real highlight of Denmark’s North Sea Coast. She’s a sailing vessel, sunk in just 12 metres of water, so it’s a perfect depth for taking your time and really soaking it all in. We love how the relatively shallow depth means plenty of ambient light filters through, illuminating the wreck’s skeletal remains. You’ll find the mast reaching up, often swaying gently with the surge, and the hull offers some decent penetration for those with the right training and confidence. It’s a great site for wreck photographers, too, especially when the light is good. The Upmeier is a "dangerous wreck" according to the charts, which just adds to its allure, we think. It’s not dangerous in the sense of collapsing on you, but more a nod to its historical status and the challenges faced by vessels navigating these waters back in the day. Our favourite part has to be the way the marine life has completely reclaimed the timbers. Expect to see substantial schooling fish hanging around the deeper sections, often barracudas or large pollock darting in and out of the shadows. The growth on the wreck itself is impressive; you’ll find anemones and soft corals clinging to every surface, creating a really vibrant ecosystem. It’s a dive that suits anyone comfortable in mild currents who appreciates a good historical wreck with plenty of life. We'd suggest going at slack tide for the best visibility and easiest exploration.
