WEILBURG - North Sea Coast

Diving the Weilburg is like stepping into a cold, salty time capsule. This old steamship, sunk by a mine in '44, sits bolt upright at 17 metres, making it surprisingly accessible for a North Sea wreck. We love how intact she is; you can really make out her original shape, from the bow rising out of the sand to the stern section, still quite proud. The currents here can be a bit frisky, so we always plan our dive for slack water, usually around high tide. What makes Weilburg a standout for us isn't just the history, though that's compelling enough. It's the life she now harbours. Expect to navigate through dense clouds of small fish, often saithe, their scales flashing as they dart around the superstructure. Ling and cod are frequent residents, often tucked into the deeper recesses or peeking from the hold. Keep an eye out for velvet crabs scuttling over the plating. The visibility here can vary wildly, sometimes a glorious 10 metres, other times a more intimate 3 or 4, but that just adds to the atmospheric gloom of the wreck. This is a dive for those who appreciate history and the rugged beauty of a cold-water wreck, comfortable in low visibility and moderate current. Bring a good torch, even on a bright day.
