Wreck of HDMS Niels Juel - North Sea Coast

The HMS M2 is one of those wrecks that just hits differently. She was a submarine turned aircraft carrier, which sounds like something out of a Jules Verne novel, and when you descend through the often green, silty water, her sheer scale starts to emerge. We’ve always found the conger eels here particularly bold, often poking their heads out of portholes or from under plating, keeping a beady eye on you. Exploring the hangar deck, imagining that small seaplane launching from below the waves, is a genuine thrill, a real sense of history brought to life. You’ll want to pick your day carefully for the M2. Slack water is absolutely key, otherwise, the currents can be quite a ride, making it a dive for experienced hands only. When conditions are good, though, the visibility can surprise you, letting you appreciate the delicate crusts of Hairy Sea-mat and the occasional lumpsucker clinging to the superstructure. Look out for the numerous bass circling the wreck and the surprising flashes of solenette blending into the sand nearby. It’s a proper expedition, a deep dive into an unusual piece of naval history, and we love it for that.
