IONION PELAGOS - Alonissos Marine Park

We’re not going to lie, the Ionion Pelagos is shallow. *Really* shallow. Two meters, at most, but don't let that fool you. This isn't some broken-up pile of metal; it’s a proper ship, just sitting there in the sun. What we love about this wreck is how approachable it is. You can spend a good hour just finning slowly over the decks, peering into the holds, and trying to imagine it as a working vessel. Built in '49, she was a steamship, and you can still make out the superstructure, even some of the winches. The light penetration is incredible, painting the metalwork in shades of blue and green, and that’s why we think it’s our favourite for photographers. Schools of damselfish shimmer over the rusted railings, and every crack seems to house a goby or a tiny crab. It’s a great spot for newer divers to get a feel for wreck diving without any of the depth anxiety, and for experienced eyes, it’s a chance to really slow down and appreciate the details, without a computer ticking away.
