CHERBOURG TECHNOLOGIE - South Coast

The Cherbourg Technologie isn't your typical dive. We're talking 1-meter depth, max. Most people just snorkel it, but we love dropping down anyway, just to get that diver's perspective. This is a yacht that went aground back in '94, high and dry on the rocks near Little Saltee Island. You can still see the hull, holed fore and aft, without a mast or keel, a proper casualty. What makes it special, for us, is how the sea has absolutely claimed it. Despite the shallow water, there's surprisingly robust growth here – anemones clinging to every surface, small crabs scuttling in the cracks. Sunlight dapples through the water, illuminating the barnacled remains, and the gentle surge rocks you as you explore the shattered timbers. It’s less about penetration and more about seeing nature reclaim a man-made object. This is a perfect spot for those who appreciate wrecks for their history and the vibrant, if tiny, ecosystems they create, or for photographers looking for an easy, well-lit subject.
