Kowloon Bridge Wreck - South Coast

The Kowloon Bridge, Ireland's largest wreck, is more than just a metal hulk; it’s a colossal, dynamic ecosystem. Sunk in 1986, this ore carrier lies broken across a seabed ranging from 5m to 20m, making it surprisingly accessible for an intermediate dive. We love the sheer scale of the place. You can spend an entire dive just exploring a fraction of it, and we often find ourselves drifting over sections we’ve never properly appreciated before. What makes it truly special are the dramatic structural changes since it broke up. The stern section, in particular, is an incredible maze of twisted steel and open holds. Inside, the light filters down, illuminating schools of poor cod zipping between the bulkheads. Keep an eye out for inquisitive common seals; they often make an appearance, darting past like torpedoes. Our favourite time to dive it is on a calm, sunny day with a slack tide – the visibility can really open up, letting you appreciate the wreck’s true dimensions. While there's always something new to see, the Kowloon rewards multiple visits; you’ll always spot a new detail, whether it’s a lone anglerfish camouflaged against the rust or a cluster of Norway lobsters peeking from a crevice. It’s an immersive, almost archaeological experience for anyone who appreciates the history and the vibrant life that reclaims it.
