PROVIDENCE - South Coast

The Providence wreck is a moody dive, proper deep-sea exploration for those who appreciate a bit of history and a lot of atmosphere. Lying at 45 metres, this isn't one for a quick splash. We love the feeling of descent here, dropping into that Irish gloom knowing you’re heading for a piece of wartime history. She was a steamship, torpedoed in 1917, and her story is palpable as you make your way along her broken decks. Visibility can be a mixed bag, but on a good day, you'll see the scale of her, twisted metal and gaping holds where the torpedo struck. Expect to find conger eels lurking in the darker corners, and crabs scuttling amongst the plates. We’ve even spotted a few large pollack schooling above her superstructure. It's a site that suits experienced divers, those comfortable with deeper profiles and potentially strong currents. Our favourite part? Peering into the engine room, imagining the chaos of her final moments. Go on a slack tide, if you can time it, for the best chance to really absorb the wreck.
