The Aran Islands are a proper commitment, not a casual dip. We're talking advanced diving, full stop. You’re coming here for those dramatic walls, dropping from 10 metres down to a solid 35, riddled with arches and overhangs. It feels ancient, a real sense of scale as you drift past rock faces draped in Pink Sea Fans. This isn't your colourful tropical reef, but the cool Atlantic water holds its own kind of magic – the sheer size of the rock formations, the way the light filters down, and the surprising encounters. Our favourite time to be here is late summer, when there’s a better chance of spotting sunfish lumbering by or even a blue shark cruising the deeper water. The visibility can vary wildly, but on a good day, it’s a deep emerald green, offering incredible views of the wall. Keep an eye out for smaller stuff too: we often see Butterfly Blennies tucked into crevices and Spotted Dragonets camouflaged against the rock. It’s wild, raw diving, perfect for those who appreciate the drama of an untamed coastline and the thrill of bigger pelagic sightings.
