EVELYN MARIE - West Coast

The Evelyn Marie is one of those wrecks that just gets under your skin. We love a good wooden wreck, and this trawler, sunk in '75, has settled nicely at 25m off Donegal. It’s not about huge pelagics here, but the sheer atmosphere of it. When you drop down, the timbers are still surprisingly intact in places, offering plenty of nooks and crannies to peer into. We've seen conger eels snaking through the beams and a surprising number of wrasse darting around the decaying structure. The real draw is the wreck's character; it feels like a ghost ship. You can make out the general shape of the vessel, the bow and stern still distinguishable, despite the decades of wave action. Visibility can be hit or miss in Ireland, but on a good day, with a bit of sunlight filtering through the green water, the Evelyn Marie is incredibly photogenic. It’s a site for those who appreciate history and the subtle beauty of a wreck slowly being reclaimed by the ocean, rather than those chasing big fish. We’d suggest going at slack tide for the best exploration.
