HMS Dunvegan Castle - West Coast

Diving the HMS *Dunvegan Castle* off Ireland’s West Coast isn't your typical Caribbean jaunt. This is cold-water wreck diving at its most rewarding. She was a grand liner, launched in 1936, then pressed into service as an armed merchant cruiser during WWII. We love how her history practically seeps into the metal. When you descend, you’re greeted by her sheer scale, a true Goliath resting on the seabed. The wreck lies broken, a testament to the brutal force that sent her down. We always find the bow particularly dramatic, rising from the gloom. Exploring the exposed sections, you'll glide past massive plates of steel, often encrusted with dead man's fingers and colourful anemones. Keep an eye out for resident conger eels peeking from gaps, and wrasse darting between the beams. It’s a dive that demands respect for both the vessel and the conditions. This site is best suited for experienced wreck divers comfortable with colder water and potentially strong currents. Our advice? Pick a calm day, and bring a good torch; the deeper sections can get properly dark.
