HMS Mashona - West Coast

The Derfflinger. Now this is a proper wreck dive, one we always circle on the calendar when we’re heading to Scapa. Forget gentle coral gardens; this is a hulking piece of history, upside down in the murky green of the Flow. You’ll be dropping onto a vast steel hull, often with visibility that feels more like fifty shades of green than anything else, but that’s part of the charm. We love pushing through the silty water, following our lights along the colossal plates and rivets, tracing the sheer scale of the ship. It’s an experience for the wreck enthusiast, for sure. The Derfflinger lies inverted at about 45 metres, a truly immense structure colonised by life. Look for the big, thick clusters of Sulphur Sponge, clinging to the steel, and if you’re patient, you might spot a bull rout tucked into a crevice or a Risso's Crab scuttling across a beam. Penetration here is for the experienced, and frankly, the exterior is so vast and interesting, we often find ourselves just exploring the sheer size of the thing. There’s a quiet majesty to it, even in the low light. Expect currents to be a factor, sometimes quite strong, so good buoyancy and a level head are key. Our best dives have been on a slack tide, letting us really soak it all in.
